Experience points are rewarded every time a puzzles is solved, a quest or expedition completed, a building upgraded or items are thrown into the Cauldron. As experience points are gathered, new levels will be reached. When a new level is reached, the player is rewarded with items and new buildings, classes, skills or ship mission types are unlocked.

Experience[]
The player can level up their character by collecting experience points. Experience points can be acquired by:
- Solving nonograms.
- Upgrading buildings.
- Completing ship missions (Patrolling).
- Completing quests (except Puzzle of the Day).
- Completing expeditions.
- Throwing items into the Cauldron.
- Supplying 3 x Firework to the Alchemist's Hut lvl. 6 (requires the completion of Festival quest).
- Items received over the warehouse limit are converted to experience points (for more information see individual items' pages).

To increase experience points received from solving puzzles learn Monk (class), Scientist (class), Zen Master (class), Intellectual (skill), acquire Dancing Shiva (artifact), craft Guild codex (craftifact) or use items, i.e. Sushi, Date cake, Cup of coffee or Smoothie. Increasing experience with these buffs doesn't also increase other loot from a solved nonogram (e.g. Coin, Wood, Stone, etc.). Experience without any bonuses is called "base XP".
By acquiring Porcelain vase (artifact) the player can also increase the amount of experience points received, but only from Cauldron.
When rewarded items exceed their corresponding warehouse capacity, they are immediately converted to experience points. Most excess items are worth 2 experience points; Katana and Bomb are worth 5; some more and some less.
The exact formula for how experience is calculated might never be known, but here are some known variables which affect experience gained from a solved nonogram:
- Experience is based on a nonogram size.
- Easier nonograms grant less experience (trivial lines, symmetry).
- Using hints reduces experience.
And some that don't:
- Using Items like Mortars, Arrows etc.
- X marks or other marks.
- Solving time.
- Amount of turns to solve the nonogram (amount of corrections).
- UI settings / UI helpers (see Settings > Assist) don't affect experience, except "auto fill trivial lines".
- Nonogram's ratings (Picture, Fun of solving, Difficulty).
XP limit for early levels[]
Until reaching a certain character level, nonogram XP rewards are capped (which might also affect loot). For example, a player with character level 30 will receive 3115 XP for solving a nonogram, while a player with character level 8 will receive only 2667 XP for solving the same nonogram. This reduction is probably in the game to avoid being able to level up 2 levels at the same time. To avoid this limitation, solve smaller/easier nonograms in early levels (1-10) and progress to bigger/harder nonograms slowly in later levels (10-20). It is unknown how far this limit follows the level, but there are only a few nonograms that even reward above 5,000 XP (level 15 limit).

Levelling rewards - patterns[]
The player's Level is shown in the circle above the experience points. To complete the Nth level, the player must collect N * 1,000 experience. This means that the Nth level ends when N * (N + 1) * 500 total experience is collected. The experience required to the next level can be calculated by the N * (N + 1) * 500 - XP formula, where XP is the current experience of the player.
For example, to complete lvl. 4, the player has to collect 4 * 5 * 500 = 10,000 experience.
The player gets rewards when they reach a new level.
Coins rewarded are calculated by multiplying the level reached by 2. This goes up to 200 Coins (level 100).
Rubies rewarded:
- Every level that ends with a 0 (10, 20, 30, etc.) the player receives 3 Rubies.
- Every level that ends with a 5 (5, 15, 25, etc.) the player receives 2 Rubies.
- In other cases the player receives 1 Ruby.
Items rewarded are always in the same order and the same amount:
Battering ram:
The player first starts receiving Battering rams at lvl. 14 (1x Battering ram). After that the player always gets 1.
Treasure map fragments (lvl. 1):
The player first starts receiving Treasure map fragments at lvl. 5 (5x Treasure map fragment lvl. 1). After that the player always gets 3.
Additional rewards
Additional rewards are rewarded when the player reaches levels 30, 50, 80 and 100. There are also additional rewards for levels 150, 200, 250, etc., which are the same as for level 100.
Unlockables[]
Unlockables are buildings, classes, skills and ship missions types, which are unlocked by levelling up your character. These follow some patterns and are annotated in the "Now available to you:" section with:
- Buildings are not annotated.
- Almost every new level up to lvl. 13, levels from 20 to 22, from 30 to 32 and at lvl. 40 a new building is unlocked.
- Classes are annotated with "Class: class_name".
- Every third level starting from lvl. 3 to lvl. 30 unlocks a new class. At lvl. 80 Zen Master is unlocked.
- Skills are annotated with "Skill: skill_name".
- Almost every skill has evenly spread levels (e.g. 7, 13, 19).
- Ship mission types are annotated with "Ship: ship_mission_type_name".
- Exploring, Fishing, Prospecting and Patrolling are unlocked at levels 23, 24, 25 and 26. Exploring is unlocked at Ship lvl. 1, Spicy Odyssey at Ship lvl. 4 and New York when Astrolabe (craftifact) is crafted.
