In Nonograms Katana, you gain experience every time you solve a puzzle, complete a quest or expedition, upgrade a building or throw items into the Cauldron. As you gain experience, you will reach new levels. When you reach a new level, you are rewarded with items and unlock buildings, classes, skills or ship expedition types.
When rewarded items exceed their corresponding warehouse capacity, they are immediately converted to experience points. Most excess items are worth 2 experience points; Katana and Bomb are worth 5; some others probably more.
The exact formula for how experience is calculated might never be known, but here are some known variables which affect experience gained from a solved nonogram:
Experience is based on a nonogram size.
Easier nonograms grant less experience (trivial lines, symmetry).
UI settings / UI helpers (see Settings > Assist) don't affect experience, except "auto fill trivial lines".
Patterns
Experience required for the next level: Current_Level_Experience + Current_Level * 1,000 = Next_Level_Experience
Example for Current_Level_Experience = 3,000, Current_Level = 3: 3,000 + 3 * 1,000 = 6,000
Coins rewarded are calculated by multiplying the level you reached by 2 and cap at 200 Coins (level 100).
Rubies rewarded:
Every level that ends with a 0 (10, 20, 30, etc.) you receive 3 Rubies.
Every level that ends with a 5 (5, 15, 25, etc.) you receive 2 Rubies.
In other cases you receive 1 Ruby.
Items rewarded are always in the same order and the same amount:

x 5

Battering ram:
You first start receiving Battering rams at lvl. 14 (you get 1). After that you always get 1.
Treasure map fragments (lvl. 1):
You first start receiving Treasure map fragments at level 5 (you get 5 of them). After that you always get 3.
Additional rewards
Additional rewards are rewarded when the player reaches levels 30, 50, 80 and 100. There are also additional rewards for levels 150, 200, 250, etc., which are the same as for level 100.
Note: Skills have "lvl." written beside them, classes don't.
